After a recent spike in daytime burglaries, residents from all over Christchurch are volunteering for the Riccarton Community Watch. During the spike last month, cuts had to be made to patrol times as there were not enough volunteers available to fill the roles. After an article was published in the Western News on September 22, Riccarton Community Watch

co-ordinator Geoff Parfitt said the patrol has had 10 residents put in applications. The increased interest in new members would bring the volunteer numbers up from 25 to 35. Mr Parfitt said this would be the most members the patrol has ever had. He said the patrol had applications come from as far as Burnside, Bryndwr and the Port Hills area. “Most burglaries happen in the

day between 10am and 4pm so having more members would mean we can increase our shift times,” Mr Parfitt said. If all applications were accepted, he said the group would be able to run five days a week, with both morning and afternoon patrols. Mr Parfitt said even driving around the area doing three 10min stops would help out, as more people noticed them when they stopped.

Welcome pack for new residents BY GRACE CABELL

domestic long haired cat initially presented to our veterinary clinic with the complaint of straining in his litter tray and licking excessively around his bottom area. This clinical sign is always a major concern to any vet. It could be a life threatening blockage of the urethra leading to the physical inability to urinate and therefore a very full hard painful bladder, which can quickly be fatal leading to electrolyte imbalances and a heart attack. Most owners who witness this behaviour are usually not very worried and think that their cat is constipated and just trying to pass faeces. Sometimes they think the veterinary visit can wait until after work or even the next day if they notice this behaviour at night, which might be too late for some cats! Ignoring a blocked cat not only has the potential to be life threatening but also complicates recovery if the bladder is stretched too large for too long. Luckily Lewis’ owner rushed him to McMaster & Heap in time and he was diagnosed with a urethral obstruction (blocked bladder). Blood work before surgery is advised to ensure his heart won’t be affected by any electrolyte imbalances and his kidneys haven’t been too damaged. Lewis was placed on intravenous fluid therapy and surgery was conducted under anaesthetic to unblock the obstruction by passing a urinary catheter into the bladder.

On X-ray Lewis was an unusual case as he had three stones present - two in his bladder and one stuck in his urethra stopping him from passing urine (x-ray picture). Most cats have a mucus or crystal plug blocking the passage therefore are easier to flush back into the bladder and manage with food and short term medication. Fortunately this stone was able to be flushed back into the bladder. The idea was to use veterinary prescription diets to dissolve these stones by creating a dilute urine and an optimal pH level of the urine. Usually stones these size will completely dissolve in 3-6 weeks. We always knew there was a chance of another obstruction but rather than going straight to surgery we tried prescription diet wet food and a plan to re-xray to check the progress in two weeks.

Lewis’ mum knew what signs to look out for and unfortunately 12 days later he re-blocked. We repeated the x-rays and discovered all three stones were stuck blocking the urethra (x-ray picture). They had been getting smaller but sadly were now stuck and needed to be flushed back into the bladder again under general anaesthetic. We decided now to take Lewis to surgery to remove the stones from his bladder. All three stones were successfully retrieved and sent off to America for analysis to confirm what they are made up of and therefore ensure he is maintained on the correct diet to prevent them forming again in future. Lewis had not been eating much at all prior to the surgery. So at the time of surgery it was decided to place a feeding tube (photo). This is a fairly easy procedure and a small soft tube was inserted straight into his oesophagus from the outside of his neck. This allows us to give him all the nutrition he needs, as well as multiple medications over the next week or two allowing him the best chance at a full recovery. He remained in the clinic for several days with his urinary catheter left in to help monitor his urine production and allow his bladder to remain completely empty to recover from the inflammation caused by the stones and surgery. After three days the urinary catheter was removed and he was able to urinate by himself. Lewis can now head home with a feeding plan for his feeding tube. Once he starts eating enough calories on his own, the tube is easily removed with him awake and will heal over by itself. He will remain on special urinary prescription diet to prevent any re-occurrence of the stones or crystal formation.

With Halswell continuing to expand one community group has come up with a way to welcome in new residents. This week, the Halswell Community Group is sending out 400 welcome packs through real estate agents, schools and churches for the newcomers. The welcome bags are packed with information from local clubs and organisations to help new residents find out what is available for them in Halswell. Since the 2011 earthquakes, the area has become increasingly residential. A 20.3ha site for sale on the corner of Halswell Junction Rd and Wigram Rd means the suburb may become even larger. Banding together over two weeks, the 15 volunteers have spent hours collecting and packing bags full of pamphlets, maps and leaflets. Bags were packed and sorted by members from the Halswell Community Project, Living Waters and overseas missioners Youth With A Mission. Funding for the bags was supplied by the Harcourt’s Foundation. Halswell Community Group organiser Kate Cleverly said she hoped the packs would help new residents settle into the area. “Halswell is growing at such a rate and there is so much building developing and people moving into existing parts of Halswell as well. When you move into such a rapidly-growing area it can be difficult to find out about local clubs,” she said. “The idea is if the real estate agent sells a house they give out a pack. Or people in

existing parts of Halswell with a new neighbour can contact us for a pack, then introduce themselves and give a welcome.” She said it not only provides information for people in the new suburbs but also gives the existing residents a chance to introduce themselves to new neighbours. Group member Chrys Horn said putting the packs together took a lot of work. “We’d been talking about it for a little while. Halswell is growing so fast it’s hard to find out about things, so we thought right, lets make some bags to help people find out,” she said. Youth funding decision likely this month BY GRACE CABELL A final decision on how the RiccartonWigram Community Board will fund youth achievement is yet to be made. The criteria review for the RiccartonWigram Youth Development Fund is “ongoing” but is likely to be completed this month. Applications are still being accepted by the board using the existing criteria. A private workshop was held by the board in July where the funding criteria was discussed. Some members still say there is an unresolved issue regarding who can receive the funds. Community board deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton said the outline for who can receive the fund is too broad. “I’d seen it as for example a young person doing well in tennis with an opportunity to play overseas as a matter of a small grant to help them with that. But if you’re funding five or six people on a school trip you don’t have the money to put to those who fit in more neatly for

the youth development fund,” she said. Riccarton-Wigram Community Board chairman Mike Mora said some board members had different views on the allocations for people travelling within New Zealand and offshore. “I’m personally very supportive. We need to review it so we’re all singing from the same hymn sheet when it comes to applications for the rest of the term,” he said. The board allocated $12,500 over the 2013-14 financial year to youth development projects. Last month $850 was allocated to sporting youth heading overseas. A grant of $450 was allocated to Courtney McGregor and $200 to Anna Tempero to assist the girls with the costs of competing at the World Gymnastics Championships in China. A further $200 was allocated to Cameron Avery towards the costs of competing at the Cross Country Championships in Australia. Ms Broughton said there needed to be a discussion on how the funding is spent but it was not their number one priority.

I understand you have just come back from a few days break after the big news, how was it? Yes, I’ve just spent three days away in the country with two good friends of mine, it was brilliant. So tell me a bit about yourself, are you Christchurch born and bred? Yes I am. I have always lived in the eastern suburbs in Shirley. I grew up there, went to Shirley Intermediate School,

Shirley Boys’ High, and then Canterbury University. My first school I worked in was Hillmorton High School. I spent 13 years there and then two years travelling around when I was first married. How did you get into your education role in the first place? I began getting into it from university. I did a Bachelor of Science in geography and economics. I loved working with young people. I always wanted to be a physical education teacher but then I realised that it was geography and social sciences that I liked. And I loved

sports coaching, so I was able to do both as a teacher. So you’ve been at Riccarton for 19 years now – how do you feel about leaving? There’s a range of emotions. Even through the whole process of applying for Burnside I was reflecting back over the sadness of 19 years, a bit of grief if you know what I mean. I love the school so much, it’s been a part of me . . . I call it my second family. It got a bit overwhelming at the end of last week so I’ve just returned back from a small break with friends and that was just what I wanted. I’ve spoken

to the staff at Burnside and have spoken to say I want to spend my time there well. But I’m here at Riccarton at the moment so life is normal for now. What propelled you to move, what was it that appealed? For me it was 19 years, you know. And also my age I suppose. I always believed I tried to impress on our staff and students to take on new challenges and here I was, thinking I should challenge myself a little bit to see if I could apply for a new position. The timing came with a school I’ve always been interested in, so there it was.

new challenge What do you think you’ll miss the most about Riccarton? I don’t think there is any one thing. It’s all encompassing. Obviously the students, I learnt so much and they inspire me every day, also the wonderful staff and the culture from our school. What are you looking forward to the most? I’m excited and thrilled by this new opportunity. I have a mix of emotions, at the moment I’m still here, but I know 2015 is coming. My thinking is already there – I’m already thinking about my next move, my thinking has started in the background. I’m excited about already working in a larger school and the people there. I’ve worked with the acting principal Sylvia Sidaway before and I think we work well together. What’s in an average day for you as a principal? I lead a pretty boring life and it’s pretty sad . . . no, for me it’s an early start, if I can I try to go to the gym first. I’m aiming for at least three times a week but fail miserably on a regular basis. I often start with breakfast meetings before school – it’s a good time to do my thinking. At the other end of the day coming across from the east is hard. So you get

here early and leave later, that’s the norm really for me. How do you cope with managing that many children? You enjoy working with the energy and enthusiasm of young people. And that excited you but it also tires you too. But at the same time it’s what keeps you young – that’s the good part. The downside comes when often they’re putting through the school through all the things that can happen out of school. Do you have children yourself? Yes we have one son, Matt. He is 24 and doing a Masters of applied psychology at Canterbury University. He loves his cricket, I love watching him when he does his cricket. You’re a big rugby fan I hear, have you come across any epic rugby talent during your time at schools? Well I was part of coaching the New Zealand senior schools rugby team for three years and in that period of time I’ve loved watching senior school rugby. A great number of players came through that, I’ve watched Andrew Mehrtens, Aaron Mauger and many of the players that have come through to become All Blacks. What is something surpris-

ing you have learnt from your principal years? It’s not so much surprising but one thing I’ve learnt is that I can’t please everyone or make them happy. I do try but all I can do is provide an environment to allow people to be happy, particularly with staff. What has been one of the biggest challenges in your career? If you can imagine, Riccarton is an organisation of more than 1000 people. It’s a daily situation of regular life issues happening at a school, dealing with students, families, staff, health issues and their own family issues, then impacting on that overall is the earthquake period of 2011. That was my next question. How did you find, as principal, the earthquakes impacted the school? I think that Riccarton has been fortunate but the impacts around the staff in practice are still there. I think that will still continue for some time. Is there anything else you would like to add? Yes. I’d like to make a mention to my wife Sue. She is my rock, and my critical friend and she is the guide behind everything I do. I’m very lucky. Thanks for your time Phil.

Neighbourhood Week

On October 18 a free barbecue event will be held by residents within the Riccarton community. The family-fun, free event includes food and activities for all ages. It will be held at Harrington Park on Peverel St in Riccarton.

It will be barbecue time for many people in the Riccarton-Wigram area next month as they gather together for Neighbourhood Week. More than $5000 worth of funding has been allocated for different events. Funding ranges from $750 for a 200-person rural garden party

to $250 for a 40-person neighbourhood park barbecue. Neighbourhood Week is held each year in October and November and is dedicated to getting to know people who live close in your area. This year Neighbourhood Week will be held over nine days between October 24 to November 2 over two weekends.

The Hornby Community Care Centre will receive some wellneeded attention from a group of Canterbury University students. As part of a second year management paper, students Angela Hill, Lucy Hodgkinson, Jorge Manas Julia and Elaine Koh are making a difference in the Hornby community by raising awareness of the resources and facilities available in the area. Ms Koh said at the moment the centre is not getting much attention. “It is hardly recognised by the public for its services,” she said. Established in 1972, the centre is attached to the Hornby Library but does not get Government funding. New community centre leader, Linda Turner, said the centre was overwhelmed with the generous offer and hoped it would bring more awareness to the underutilised facility. “Things have slipped away a wee bit so I’ve started trying to build things back up,” she said. Ms Koh said they were us-

ing marketing and advertising strategies to push awareness for the centre, such as a Facebook group, and advertising through university society OpSoc. The students have already worked with the centre to raise youth awareness, by allowing a special discounted clothing rate for the OpSoc Charity Ball. Students were able to purchase clothing from the centre’s opshop to wear at the ball for 50 per cent off. “We had lots of people coming in. They were so much fun – a real breath of fresh air,” said Mrs Turner. She said the centre provided fantastic opportunities and she hoped to get more people coming in on a regular basis. The centre includes rooms available to hire, a new-born hearing clinic, a citizens advice bureau and an opshop. Starting from today the opshop is running a $5 fill-a-bag promotion for two weeks. The Hornby Community Care Centre is located at 8 Goulding Ave.

Surf legend statue slammed BY GABRIELLE STUART A plan to build a sculpture in New Brighton to mark the visit of Hawaiian surfing legend Duke Kahanamoku is causing controversy. The New Brighton Pier and Foreshore Society has commissioned local artist Bon Suter to create an 8m wave sculpture, to mark 100 years since the visit. But fellow New Brighton artist Shane Baxter believes the Kahanamoku family would not approve. “That type of art is not Hawaiian art; it’s an English way of doing sculpture. They didn’t surf on stone surfboards, they went out into the forest and picked the wood and carved their own boards.” He wanted to create a carved wooden sculpture for the memorial. He said he submitted a proposal to the society in 2005, when the idea of creating a sculpture was first raised, but didn’t hear back from it. Society chairperson Alan Cockburn said that Mr Baxter did submit a proposal, but it was going to cost about $60,000. “It was just out of our league. That’s just ludicrous money, and that was 10 years ago.” About $25,000 has been set aside by the society for the sculpture, which was all raised privately. Mr Cockburn said that most of that money would be used paying for materials, and the people involved in creating the sculpture, including Ms Suter, were donating a lot of their time to the project. He said that Mr Baxter had not been willing to do that.

But Mr Baxter said he could have scaled down his plans to fit the budget. He said he just wanted to see the sculpture done in the way the family would have wanted it done. “I don’t care if you’re the best sculptor in the world, it’s about showing respect. You’ve got to be a surfer to understand those things. If you wanted to get a Maori tattoo you wouldn’t get a German to do it.” Mr Baxter is a competitive surfer, and uses the same stand up paddle surfing techniques Kahanamoku made famous. He is also an experienced sculptor, teaching indigenous carving at Otago University, and has met with members of the Kahanamoku family in Hawaii while competing as a surfer there. Ms Suter has also visited the home of the family in Hawaii, and has been working for more than a year to research and plan the memorial sculpture. She started work on the sculpture last week, and it is expected to be completed in time for the anniversary of Kahanamoku’s visit in February next year. She said she was very sad to hear there were objections to her sculpture, which will be created out of concrete, blue glass and fine fibre optics. She said her aim was to honour the legendary surfer. “I care about the people involved and I care about Duke – he was an absolutely divine man. Everyone I spoke to in Hawaii was really enthusiastic about it.”

Once again kitchen fires featured this week with two incidents where major damage occurred. A fire in Eureka St, Aranui, last Sunday was the result unattended cooking. The house is a write-off. On the same day in Ilam Park Rd a gas cooker, outside on a deck, set fire to the wooden table it was sitting on. Because the user wasn’t there a fire developed, entered the roof of the house and the result is a badly damaged home. In both cases the result could have been so much better if only the would-be cooks had stayed at their cookers. I know it’s cruel to be critical of people who are suffering loss but if one or five or a 100 people read this and take the advice onboard we might avert another similar incident in the future. We often get called to party bonfires two or even three times in a night where partygoers re-light their fire after the brigade has left. The hunt is on for more than 200 volunteers to help ensure everything runs smoothly when the FIFA U-20 World Cup is in town next June. Christchurch will host nine matches during the tournament, including a quarter-final and a semi-final, over a two-week period. Between 250 and 300 local volunteers are needed during that time, and those interested are able to register online any time between now and October 17. Christchurch venue general manager Karin Osterberger said volunteering would offer people a chance to be part of the event. “To be part of the second largest men’s football tournament is an incredible opportunity and a great learning experience.” Volunteers will take on a wide range of roles, some of which include greeting guests, issuing accreditation, organising catering and other hospitality services, and assisting fans and media. Applicants get to specify the three roles they would most prefer, and while some require specific skills, training will be provided

Ms Osterberger said the wide variety of roles meant there would be something of interest to everyone who applied. “Whether it’s accreditation or catering or tourism or operations or competitions, there’s lots of different areas in which they’ll be operating.” The U-20 World Cup will be the biggest sporting event to be held in the city since the earthquakes, and volunteers will play a large role in ensuring it goes off without a hitch. Ms Osterberger said it would be a great showcase for the city. “(The tournament) is an incredible opportunity to put Christchurch back on the map and let the

world know that we’re ready and open for business.” The local volunteers will be part of a nationwide team of more than 2000 working across the seven host cities. More than 10,000 international visitors are expected during the tournament, with more than 25,000 tickets already sold. Besides hosts New Zealand, seven other countries have already qualified: Fiji from Oceania, and Germany, Portugal, Austria, Hungary, Serbia and Ukraine from Europe. The qualifiers from Asia will be determined later this month, while those from North America, South America and Africa will be found early next year, before the draw for the tournament is made in early February.

he University of Canterbury is taking the opportunity created by the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 to revitalise its campus to create a learning environment that is innovative and engaging, and one that produces outstanding graduates in all disciplines. The next chapter of UC’s history will be one of renewal and transformation. The earthquakes have created huge challenges for our University, but this is also a time of great opportunity. The campus rebuild will see UC offer students some of the most modern facilities in New Zealand — reflecting new ways of teaching and learning. We are drawing on our history and bringing the strengths of a bicultural nation and multicultural society to what — and how — we teach. This, combined with our international partnerships, will ensure our staff and

students are best placed to take advantage of the connected world we live in. With support from the Government’s investment of up to $260 million, the University will embark on two major construction projects that will provide high quality research and teaching environments with state-of-the-art infrastructure which will encourage and promote excellence. The Rutherford Science and Innovation Centre, a $213 million development due for completion in 2017, will see the creation of an international centre of excellence in science that will be a cutting-edge centre for teaching, learning, research and innovation in science, and science and technology education. The College of Engineering Precinct, a $142-million development in the College of Engineering, will create a learning environment that will produce graduates with skills, hands-on experience and knowledge sought by industry.
